THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ART-MAKING AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Creativity moves human beings beyond the familiar and accepted, and generates positive social aspects, helping to rise above established knowledge, ritual, and tradition to make necessary changes through the decision-making process in the face of fear and resistance.

Higher emotional intelligence, encompassing emotion regulation, correlates positively with creative thinking and an ability to exercise control over divergent thinking as well as resolve cognitive dissonance. The more emotions are understood, the more capable individuals become at harnessing creativity and channeling it into meaningful leadership endeavors in all fields.

Dispositional mindfulness is the tendency for individuals to be aware of their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral patterns in a non-judgmental way (K.W. Brown & Ryan, 2003).

Creativity engages the frontal lobes of the mind which relate to our problem solving abilities, memory, communication, and judgment (de Souza et al, 2014).

Rahul Jandial, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon and cancer scientist from City of Hope hospital in California advises that we exercise the creative parts of our mind just like we do our biceps to keep them flexed. Studies show that people who take part in creative thinking activities actually have better memories and are able to solve problems better than those who do not (Zaman, 2000).

Another benefit of practicing creativity such as playing music, drawing, dancing, and expressive writing, is that individuals actually reduce stress and anxiety levels. Being creative helps us to generate positive emotions which are necessary for individuals to feel at ease making decisions.
